Follow-up on today's report of a weapon in school

Posted Date: 9/24/24 (9:06 PM)

Good Evening TSD Community,

I am sending this message as a follow-up to today's event.  While I do not have additional detail to share on the event itself, I can provide the following information:

  • School operation continued as normal for the remainder of the school day, and we held our after-school athletic events as normal.
  • Telluride Middle/High School staff met after school to debrief the event and determine next steps for communicating with students on Wednesday morning and providing supports for all those in need.
  • The school district will continue with established protocols following an event like this.
  • We have no reason to believe there is any additional threat to the schools or district at this time, and will plan for continued operation with a heightened level of awareness.
I cannot emphasize enough the point made in the Marshals press release;  it is extremely important to communicate any concerns to law enforcement and/or the school immediately - whether they appear real or not.  It is our job to then sift through the information we have to determine the potential credibility of any threat.   We are fortunate that a few students found a trusted adult to share information which then allowed us to act quickly on that information.  Please reiterate with your children that responsible actions like these keep our school community safe.
  • Additionally, the Safe2Tell hotline can be reached at 877-542-7233 or safe2tell.org
I also can assure you that we will continue to do everything in our power to keep everyone in our school community safe.  That is our top priority.

With Gratitude,
John Pandolfo
Superintendent
