Health Screenings at School

Overview

Health screenings in schools help identify potential health issues early on. They're essential for student success and are conducted following Colorado State requirements. 

Colorado Law: Per Colorado Revised Statutes Title 22. Education § 22-1-116, sight and hearing tests are mandatory for children in kindergarten, first, second, third, fifth, seventh, and ninth grades. Records of these tests are maintained by the school, and parents are informed if a deficiency is found. Exceptions are made if a parent or guardian objects on religious or personal grounds. 

Annual Screenings: K, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9th graders, plus students with special needs.

 

Contact the school nurse if you would like to opt your student out of the annual screenings. 

  • A student's ability to see is crucial for learning, and vision screening is vital to school health services. This screening, conducted by professional school nurses, follows the recommended guidelines of the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).

  • The Colorado Department of Education emphasizes the importance of hearing screening programs, recognizing them as vital for removing barriers to learning and fostering language development. As hearing loss is the most prevalent developmental disorder in children, there's a continuous need for regular screening, given its critical role in enabling students to read, write, listen, and speak proficiently.

  • Includes growth charts, blood pressure information, and BMI assessments. 

  • Maintaining good dental hygiene is essential for your child, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, as untreated cavities can lead to problems with eating, speaking, and learning. Our school offers resources and support for oral health, including regular visits from Skippy Dental, and we can provide dental hygiene tools if needed.

    Why and How to Brush Your Teeth Video:

  • We provide supplies (wax, new brushes, and ice packs as needed), medication for pain (with signed permission form), and assistance for emergencies. 

    If more care is needed, the nurse will assist with referrals. For questions, or to receive dental hygiene supplies, contact the school nurse.
