Early Access Identification is available for highly gifted 4—and 5-year-olds, allowing them to enter Kindergarten and/or first grade earlier than their age would permit.
Testing for early access opportunities is completed by request only. All requests must be submitted in writing to the child's home school district by the April 1 preceding enrollment. This allows school staff enough time to administer and analyze the assessment data.
Early access is not appropriate for every child. Careful consideration is given to ability, current achievement levels, and social/emotional readiness. The criteria for admitting a child for early access is much more rigorous than a gifted identification to ensure proper placement for the young child. All four areas must indicate that a child is ready for advanced placement.
Early access is only allowed in a student's home district. For additional information, please contact the principal of Telluride Elementary School, Kelly Treinen, at ktreinen@telluride.k12.co.us. Following the written request to consider a student for early access, the school principal will provide the parent with documents to complete.
