Telluride School District
Grade: Kindergarten
Mathematics Content Standards
By the end of kindergarten,
students understand small numbers, quantities, and simple shapes in their
everyday environment. They count,
compare, describe and sort objects, and develop a sense of properties and
patterns.
Standard 1: Number Sense
Area 1.1: Whole Numbers
1.1.1:
Uses objects and pictures to represent whole numbers from 0-50
1.1.2:
Count, recognize, represent, name, and order a number of objects (up to 30).
1.1.3: Uses
objects to demonstrate the meanings of equal to, less than, greater than,
fewest and most.
1.1.4:
Uses objects to demonstrate parts and wholes
1.1.5:
Understands the concept of zero e.g. can locate zero on a number line,
demonstrates understanding that zero is used to mean "not any", and
uses zero as a place holder (10, 20, 30)
1.1.6:
Counts from 1-50
1.1.7:
Uses one to one correspondence to count
Area: 1.2: Computation
1.2.1:
Draws pictures to form sets of up to ten objects
1.2.2:
Adds and subtracts whole numbers by combining and separating objects
Area 1.3: Decimals,
Fractions and Money
1.3.1:
Names pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar
Area 1.4: Sequencing
1.4.1: Uses ordinal position for
first through tenth
1.4.2: Sequences whole numbers from
0-20
Area 1.5:
Estimating
1.5.1:
Estimates a reasonable quantity for a given number of objects less than 20
Standard 2: Algebraic Thinking
Area 2.1: Patterns
2.1.1: Recognize, constructs and
extends patterns
Area 2.2: Sorting, Classifying and Describing
2.2.1:
Sorts, classifies, describes and orders collections of objects in a variety of
ways
Standard 3: Data Collection, Analysis, Statistics,
Probability
Area 3.1: Charts and
Graphs
3.1.1: Reads, creates, and discusses simple
picture and real object graphs
Area 3.2: Data
3.2.1:
Gathers data relating to familiar experiences by counting and tallying
Area 3.3: Probability
3.3.1: Flips two colored counters or coins to generate and
tally results
Standard 4: Geometry
Area 4.1: Shapes, Angles, Lines and Curves
4.1.1:
Matches a pattern block (or other geometric manipulative) to its congruent
shape on paper
4.1.2: Recognize, identify, and create circles, triangles,
squares, rectangles, ellipses (ovals), and rhombuses (diamonds)
4.1.3:
Uses geometric shapes to solve a problem, e.g. "Can you make a house?" or "Can
you make 3 triangles, all different sizes?"
4.1.4: Uses words such as top, bottom, above, below,
beside, right and left to describe the relative position of three or more
objects
Area 4.2: Measuring
4.3.1:
Measure the lengths of the sides of triangles, squares, and rectangles using
non-standard units
Standard 5: Measurement
Area 5.1: Time
5.1.1: Tells time to the nearest hour using analog and
digital clocks
5.1.2:
Describe the units for measuring time.
5.1.3:
Compares and sequences various times
Area 5.2: Estimating and Measuring
5.2.1:
Estimates and measures length in non-standard units
5.2.2:
Estimates the measurement of weight by heavier and lighter
5.2.3: Selects the appropriate units of measurement for
time and length
Area 5.3: Comparing and Ordering
5.3.1: Compares and orders objects according to measurable
attributes of length and weight
Standard 6: Reasoning and Problem Solving
Area 6.1: Mathematical Reasoning
6.2.1: Determine the approach, materials, and strategies to
be used
Area 6.2: Finding and Communicating Solutions
6.2.1:
Communicates reasoning (orally, visually, and/or in writing) when solving math
problems
