Welcome to Telluride School District R-1

Mike Gass

 Mike Gass, Superintendent

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! With the late spring and the heavy snow, this summer was the complete opposite of just a year ago. One thing remains the same, I enjoy the beginning of the school year and the energy, optimism, and thirst for learning our students bring in the fall. TSD will see a steady enrollment and once again class sizes that allow our staff to pay unique attention to each student. We continue to show that our focused effort on growth for every student is the key to move us toward our mission of being a school district where “all means all.”

We continue to focus on building relationships with our students and understanding the pressures of being a student in today’s world. We also work hard to not lose the concept of growing the whole child. This year will continue our legacy of a wide array of programming featuring languages, arts, activities, STEM, entrepreneurship and ski pe. As we review our most recent results, Telluride continues to lead the state as one of the highest performing districts, with growth outpacing the state in all but two areas. What I enjoy about the small size of our district is we can look at those results and change our program to better serve our students. Over my tenure we have worked hard to develop our leaders and refine our systems. Our instructional discussions this year will focus on implementing the new Colorado standards and refining our best practices to capture what is being asked of our students to demonstrate for their academic assessments.

Our year kicked off with Christian Moore, the founder of the WhyTry Organization. In his opening address he framed the importance of developing our social-emotional efforts to even greater depths for our educators. Our students will continue to gain skills to take care of themselves and each other. Staff will be given strategies to understand the social-emotional needs of our students and how to connect them with our community resources. In closing, I want to thank our Telluride parents for allowing me to be a part of this successful district. Your child and his or her safety are my number one priority. A close second, is providing them a world- class education that allows them to pursue their dreams and life goals wherever that may lead them.

Sincerely, Mike Gass
